Map (Plan)
This plan shows all structures that are to our knowledge known to have been standing at the Todai-ji complex at 752.
Those buildings filled in are those that are still around, the ones with just the outline were never rebuilt.
Perhaps, an interesting point of research would be to figure out why certain buildings were decided to be brought back while others were not. Many points of argument could be made such as the availability of materials, building techniques, cost, etc. But when such a massive effort to rebuild and maintain such a complex are taken, it really makes one wonder what the decision process was. As an example, the Pagoda pair that would flank the path into the Great Buddha Hall are undeniably iconic parts of the complex, despite never having been rebuilt. Why was such an integral part of its imagery left out?
